San: What are the top asset management technology trends you see being the most prominent in Asia right now?


Goldstein: Trading, compliance, straight-through-processing and operational risk management. The opportunities afforded by collaboration technologies are also starting to gain in interest.  These are global trends.  In Asia, there is also a growing interest in increasing efficiency in cross border clearing and settlement.
   
San: What are your top IT priorities; and how will they be translated into the Asia Pacific market in 2010?


Goldstein: We are focusing on the optimisation of technology to best support our customers and businesses. This is expressed as a series of initiatives which balance innovation, agility, service and total cost of ownership.   Using technology to improve the productivity and efficiency of our employees and of course risk management and compliance are taking up an ever increasing share of our activities. 


In 2010, to further support our growth in Asia Pacific, we are making significant investment in local infrastructure, data centres and processing capabilities in the region.



San: BNY Mellon has a global presence. How do you maintain a uniform strategy across Asia where cultures, legislation and market maturity differ significantly?


Goldstein: Broadly speaking, we leverage our scale and global capabilities to deliver services for all our businesses.  At the same time, we are very focused on serving local markets, providing differentiated performance and compliance with local regulations. 


This often means relying on local solutions.  We are organised to ensure that wherever in the world we do business, we are delivering the whole firm to the local marketplace.


San: Do you feel your background in enterprise architecture gives you a competitive edge over CIOs without extensive architecture knowledge?


Goldstein: When it comes to technical strategy, I think this engineering background definitely gives me an advantage. 


San: SOA is reportedly key to BNY Mellon’s IT strategy. What have been some of the benefits of SOA technology?


Goldstein: A large component of building new applications often involves the recreation of similar core capabilities or services.   Building these common capabilities once and leveraging them extensively has decreased time to market, increased reliability and lowered costs of delivery. 



San: What keeps you passionate about your job – is it the technology or the sector?


Goldstein: I love what I do.  The constant challenge to innovate as the business landscape evolves keeps me passionate about my job.   Managing a global and dynamic organisation also affords me great opportunities to work with intelligent, driven staff in some of the most dynamic places in the world.
